저와 아내가 간사를 시작한것이 기억에 맞다면 2005년에 풀자를 시작으로 간사생활을 시작했던 것같습니다.
그당시만해도 총 참석인원이 1000명을 넘는때였고 등록취소가 많아서 실제 수용가능 인원보다 많은 사람들의 등록을 받았는데
그해에는 유난히 취소인원이 적어서 첫날 등록날에 방이 모자르는 사태가 벌어졌던 것으로 기억을 합니다.
결국 9시경에 간사들이 모두 방을 빼서 인근에 있는 호텔로 숙소를 옮기고 저희방들을 참석자들에게 내주었던 기억이
있습니다. 참석자중에 등록을 늦게 해서 방배정을 받지 못하고 밤늦게 까지 기다리던 참석자 한명이 등록팀 간사들에게
화를 내며 난리를 폈습니다. 결국 밤늦게 방배정을 받았는데 나중에 그 참석자가 누군가에게 간사들이 참석자들을 위해서
방까지 뺐다는 소식을 듣고서는 코스타가 끝나고 돌아가는 금요일날 thank you card를 남기고 갔었습니다.
헌신적으로 참석자들을 위해서 섬기는 간사들의 노고를 알았다며 자신의 부족한 행동을 용서해 달라고…
이제 좀더 올바른 크리스챤으로 살아가도록 하겠다고 전했던 간사첫해에 일어났던 일은 영원히 잊지 못할 것같습니다.

어떤 자매가 KOSTA에 와 은혜를 받고, 마치 적그리스도인처럼 살아가는 자기 동생을 두고 기도하기 시작했습니다. 다음 해 동생이 유학을 오게 되었는데, 미리 미국 생활을 익히고 영어 공부를 하는 것이 좋다며 2달간 책임질테니, 일찍 오도록 했습니다. KOSTA 시작하기 하루 전날 도착케한 동생을 데리고 KOSTA에 참석한 것입니다. 동생의 반응이 상상이 됩니까? 언급도 않고 수양회로 데리고 온 누나와 말도 하지 않고 3일간 방에서 혼자 지냈습니다. 조장도 멘토도 그를 건드릴 수가 없었습니다. 그 형제는 음식만 먹고 혼자 방에서 지내는 것이 답답했는지, 4일째 아침 집회의 맨 뒷 좌석에 앉았고 … “복음이란 무엇인가”의 세미나에 들어갔고… 그 밤 홍정길 목사님의 말씀을 듣는 중에 주님께서 그 형제를 만져 주셨습니다. 그 형제가 얼마나 통곡을 했던지요!! 마지막 새벽 시간에서도 통곡하면서 “난 이제 찾았는데… 우리 부모는 어떻게 해”하는 동생의 말에 누나도 코스탄들도 울었습니다. 다메섹의 사울처럼 변했고, 한 가정이 변하는 역사를 KOSTA를 통해 보게 하신 주님께 영광과 찬양을 돌립니다.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

(첫 선교사가 김대식 교수) “통곡의 방”은 일명 “선교사를 키우는 방”으로 불리곤 했답니다. 이선영 자매는 4회와 5회에서 “풀자” (풀타임 자원 봉사)로 돕던 형제와 다음해에 부부가 되어 참석했습니다. 그 때부터 “짝 찾는 방”이 되었습니다. 이 통곡의 방을 우명자 사모님을 비롯하여 여러 사모님들이 도우셨고, 이름이 생각나지 않은 위스콘신 교회의 사진 속의 사모님께서 10년간을 지키셨습니다. 어바나 샴페인의 한 교회의 윤미경 사모님은 15년 이상 “영아 2반”을 섬기는 숨은 봉사하셨습니다. 이런 섬김으로 코스탄들이 은혜를 받았나 봅니다.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column text_color=”” animate=”” animate_delay=”” width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”5672″ align=”” img_size=”full” img_link_large=”” img_link_new_tab=”” animate=”” animate_delay=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]

한국으로 돌아가기 전 마지막 여름 방학이다. 가족들과 장거리 로드 트립을 나섰다. 늦깍이 유학생을 시작할 때 이미 먼 길을 떠난 것이지만 매일 저녁 텐트를 치고 이동을 하는 여행자의 삶은 유학생의 그것과는 또 다른 것이다. 다시 길 위에 선 것이다.

북쪽으로 진로를 잡은 우리 가족은 국립공원들을 지나 밴쿠버 인근의 지인을 만나기 위해 국경을 넘게 되었다. 비자 발급을 위해 대사관을 들어가도 느껴지는 압박이 있는데 육로로 국경을 넘는 상황은 긴장하기에 충분했다. 더욱이 거주하는 곳, 학교 소재지, 그리고 몰고 온 차의 번호판이 모두 다른 우리는 이상하게 보였을 것이다. 이것저것 캐묻던 국경경비대원은 마지막으로 여행 중인 우리가 자신을 보호하기 위해 무기를 소지하고 있는지 물었다. 총이 없다는 대답에 경비대원은 “캠핑도 하는 것 같은데 너희가 위험할 때 어떻게 자신을 지키려고 하느냐?”고 한 번 더 물었다.

그렇게 국경을 넘어 지인의 집에서 따뜻한 환대를 경험하고 이틀 뒤 다시 미국으로 돌아오게 되었다. 미국으로의 재입국은 쉽지 않았다. 미국 쪽 국경경비대원은 일일이 여권과 가족들의 얼굴을 대조하며 묻다가 조수석에 앉아 있는 아내에게 미국에서 어떤 공부를 했는지 물었다. J-2 신분인 아내에게 남편이 공부하는 동안 어떤 공부를 했는지 묻는 것은 일종의 trick question이었다. 그렇게 이것저것 묻던 경비대원은 우리 차를 주차장에 세우게 하고 사무실로 들어가라고 했다. 사무실에 들어가니 먼저 도착해 있는 여권과 서류들을 다른 직원이 살피고 있다. DS-2019에 국제학생담당자의 서명도 있고 여권과 비자에 아무런 문제가 없지만, 국경에서 길어지는 체류시간이 점점 무거워 지고 있었다. 더 이상의 질문도 없었고 우리는 그저 벤치에 앉아 30분 가까이 기다려야 했다. “협조해 줘서 고맙다”라는 말과 함께 여권과 서류를 돌려받고 우리는 다시 합법적으로 입국할 수 있었다.

미국-캐나다 국경 통과 경험은 “The Sent: 보냄 받은 자들”이라는 주제로 열리는 코스타 참석을 위해 시카고로 향하는 남은 여행 기간 동안 여러 가지 생각을 남겼다. 국경을 넘을 때 받았던 무기 소지 여부를 묻는 캐나다 쪽에서의 질문과 합법적 체류 여부를 묻는 미국 쪽에서의 질문은 지금 내 삶의 여정의 상황을 상징적으로 보여준다. 무기 소지 여부에 대한 질문은 단지 미국과 캐나다의 문화적 차이를 보여주는 질문을 넘어 ‘나는 지금 이곳에서 누구인가?’ ‘나를 보호하는 것은 무엇인가?’와 같은 깊은 질문으로 연결되었다. 합법적인 모든 서류들을 제시했음에도 불구하고 국경 통과 시 겪어야 했던 잠깐의 긴장과 불안함은 미국 사회에서 “undocumented”들이 겪는 일상적인 불안이 무엇인지 생각해 볼 기회였다. 그리고 한 가지 더, 이 모든 질문은 익숙한 내 삶의 자리를 떠나 경계를 넘어설 때 만나게 되는 낯선 질문들이었다.
삶의 자리를 바꾸고 경계를 넘어서는 이야기가 성서 곳곳에 등장한다. 그 이야기를 붙잡고 사는 우리는 과연 어디에서 어디로 보냄 받은 것인가? 이 질문이 낯설게 여겨진다면 익숙한 삶의 자리를 떠나 경계를 넘어보라고 말하고 싶다. 경계선과 주변부에서 우리는 내가 누구인지, 어디에서 어디로 보냄 받았는지 더 잘 볼 수 있을 것이다.
